MRS Rehab founding

Our Story

In the early 2000s, a group of behavioral health professionals in the Tri-Valley area noticed a troubling pattern: families from Danville, San Ramon, and Pleasanton were driving two or three hours each way to reach quality addiction treatment facilities. Some gave up before they ever arrived. Others returned home without the follow-up support they needed.

The founders of MRS Rehab refused to accept that geography should determine whether someone gets help. They pooled their clinical experience, secured a location on Hartz Avenue, and opened a 67-bed treatment center built specifically for this community. Their mission was straightforward: bring world-class addiction treatment to Danville so no family in the Tri-Valley would have to choose between quality care and staying close to home.

Twenty-two years and more than 14,700 patients later, that founding principle still drives every decision we make. Our team of 121 clinicians, counselors, and support staff continues to deliver the same neighborhood-rooted, outcome-focused care that launched this center.

Our Values

Our Mission

MRS Rehab exists to facilitate whole-person transformation. We believe addiction is not an isolated condition but a signal that mind, body, and spirit are out of alignment. Our mission is to treat every dimension of the individual, equipping each person with the internal resources and external support systems required to sustain recovery long after they leave our care. We measure success not by discharge dates but by the quality of life our alumni report months and years down the road.

Treatment Philosophy

Our clinical framework rests on three pillars that reinforce each other at every stage of care:

  • Motivational Enhancement: We meet each person where they are. Using motivational interviewing techniques, our counselors help clients discover their own reasons for change rather than imposing external expectations.
  • Peer Accountability: Recovery does not happen in isolation. Daily community meetings, peer mentorship pairings, and evening house meetings create a network of mutual support that research consistently links to sustained sobriety.
  • Mind-Body Connection: Yoga, equine therapy, adventure therapy, and art therapy work alongside evidence-based clinical modalities like CBT and EMDR to restore the physical and emotional balance that substance use disrupts.

Our Team

Dr. Patricia Galvan, MD

Medical Director

Board-certified in addiction medicine and psychiatry, Dr. Galvan has overseen medical detox and dual diagnosis treatment at MRS Rehab for 12 years. She completed her residency at UCSF and brings specialized expertise in medication-assisted treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Under her leadership, our medical team has safely guided over 5,000 patients through withdrawal stabilization.

Marcus Ellison, LMFT

Clinical Director

Marcus holds a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from Pepperdine University and has spent 18 years in residential addiction treatment. He designed our peer accountability framework and community-meeting model, drawing on research that shows peer-led programming reduces 90-day relapse rates by up to 27%. He supervises all individual and group therapy programming at the facility.

Angela Tran, LCSW

Trauma & Dual Diagnosis Program Lead

Angela specializes in trauma-focused CBT and EMDR for clients with co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders. With 10 years of clinical experience, she developed our integrated dual diagnosis track that coordinates psychiatric care with addiction counseling. Her approach has helped hundreds of clients address the root causes behind their substance use.

David Kowalski, CADC-II

Peer Recovery & Community Programs Manager

A certified alcohol and drug counselor and person in long-term recovery himself, David manages our morning community meetings, peer mentorship pairings, and evening house meetings. His lived experience allows him to connect with clients who are resistant to treatment, and he coordinates our alumni network of more than 2,400 active members in the Tri-Valley area.

Dr. Simone Achebe, PsyD

Director of Outpatient Services

Dr. Achebe earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley and has spent 14 years developing outpatient and intensive outpatient programming for adults in recovery. She oversees step-down care and relapse prevention planning, ensuring that every client leaving residential treatment has a structured, measurable aftercare plan in place.

What Our Alumni Say

"I fought treatment for two years. My family begged, my boss gave me an ultimatum, and I still told myself I could handle it. When I finally walked through the doors at MRS Rehab, I expected cold walls and judgment. Instead I found people who had been exactly where I was. The morning community meetings broke through my resistance faster than anything else could have. I have been sober for 14 months now, and I actually look forward to waking up."

- Jason M., Danville Resident, Alumni (2025)

"After two combat deployments, I came home carrying things I could not put into words. Alcohol became my way of coping until it became the problem. The clinical team at MRS Rehab understood service-related trauma without me having to explain every detail. Between EMDR sessions and the peer mentorship program, I learned how to process pain instead of numb it. I finally feel like the person my family remembers."

- Staff Sgt. Kevin R., Tri-Valley Area, Alumni (2024)

"Watching your child struggle with addiction is the most helpless feeling a parent can endure. We tried three other facilities before finding MRS Rehab. The difference was immediate. They included us in family therapy from week one, explained the treatment plan in terms we could understand, and kept us updated every step of the way. Our daughter completed the full 90-day residential program and just celebrated two years of sobriety."

- Linda and Robert T., Parents, Danville (2024)
